Cook Scholarship Supports Study Abroad Opportunities

A generous gift from Richard and Mary Ann Cook supports international study abroad opportunities for Florida Atlantic University College of Business students. The gift established the Richard and Mary Ann Cook Study Abroad Fund, which provides selected students with a $5,000 stipend each to participate in a College of Business summer program.

The Cooks, who are Florida Atlantic alumni, are dedicated to supporting the next generation of business leaders. An important part of this education is understanding how other countries conduct business.

“Travel abroad is the only way to truly understand the culture and business values of other countries,” said Mary Ann Cook. “We believe participating in a study abroad program is an excellent opportunity to begin this learning process.”

The stipend covers tuition, fees, lodging, food and other per diem expenses. Students take classes for credit towards earning their business degrees. They develop skills to successfully participate in the global workforce and economy.

Sophia Schroy received the scholarship to study in Seville, Spain, the first half of summer 2025. The six-week business and internship program offers courses in management and marketing. Students immerse themselves in the Spanish culture by living with a Spanish family.

“Studying abroad in Seville this summer has truly been one of the most beneficial and rewarding academic and personal experiences I have ever had,” said Schroy. “I’m so grateful that I got to live and study in such a beautiful city, and I got to learn so much about myself and go on a personal journey through the program. I made some amazing connections and so many fun memories that I will cherish forever. I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore the world and further my studies.”

Studying in Lyon, France, Lisa Freiheit participated in the College of Business program, Lyon Uncorked. This experience allows students to explore the world of food and wine in this French culinary center through classes, hands-on tastings, and excursions to vineyards and local markets, gaining insights into the global food industry.

“Learning about cultural differences and immersing myself in the study abroad group was an amazing and eye-opening experience,” said Freiheit. “I gained a deeper understanding of global perspectives and built meaningful connections along the way. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity and everything I’ve learned through this program.”
